Southern secessionist groups said they were holding three Yemeni soldiers kidnapped towards the end of January. On 6 March, Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula claimed responsibility for the shooting of five soldiers two separate attacks during the ongoing protests. Four of the soldiers were killed in Marib province when the perpetrators opened fire on a passing military vehicle. Two of the soldiers were part of the Republican Guard. The other death was that of an army colonel who was shot as he went shopping in Zinjibar, Abyan province
